Clinical Experiences

All teacher education students must complete a background check before participating in any field experience or student teaching.

Upon admission, you will complete a comprehensive background check. The semester before student teaching, you will complete another student teacher background check.

You’ll get an email from the Center for Student Success with details for completing these background checks.

Students will purchase Education Minnesota Aspiring Educators liability insurance before beginning their work in the classroom.

EMAE insurance is valid from Sept. 1- Aug. 31 each school year.

You will apply as an Aspiring Educator from the Education Minnesota Union website.

Use the mailing address where you would like your Education Minnesota Membership card to be delivered within the next 6-8 weeks.

You can use the confirmation email to show you have membership until your card arrives.

About 2 weeks after you apply online, you can create a member account for the Education Minnesota Union. Be sure to have your membership ID number and use the same email address from your application form.

Once you are a registered member, you can access all the resources for teachers, including educator discounts.

Students complete the edTPA during the semester when they are student teaching.

EdTPA is part of the licensure process that requires candidates to use teaching materials (e.g. lesson plans, assignments, video and classroom assessments of learning) to evaluate their teaching and student learning.

EdTPA also provides data about what should be expected of teacher candidates in:

• planning for instruction,
• delivering instruction,
• assessing learning,
• analyzing the impact of their teaching
• supporting students’ academic language development

Because the process includes videotaping along with writing, students have the opportunity to grow through feedback and reflection.
